Have you ever tried to grill a pizza?
I had my first experience with this recently and I have to say it wasn’t as difficult as I thought it would be and it tastes fantastic! The dough should be rolled pretty thin which creates a nice crisp crust on the grill. The two things that I found were most important is making sure the dough will easily transfer from whatever you rolled it out on onto the grill, and that you have all of your topping near by and ready to go.
Once you get the dough onto the oiled grill grates you have to work quickly. When the dough starts to bubble and get puffy it’s time to flip it. Once it is flipped spread on your sauce, sprinkle on the cheese and place the topping on. When your cheese is melted (this will only take a few minutes) remove it from the grill.
Now, lets talk about the toppings! I’ve never used fig jam, but something about using it as a pizza sauce sounded very appealing to me. I wanted to have some saltier toppings to help balance the sweetness of the jam so I chose to use gorgonzola and gouda cheese and prosciutto. I finished it off with a sweet bartlett pear thinly sliced and red onion.
The first bite into this pizza was amazing! It was crispy, salty, and sweet all at the same time. I highly recommend not only trying this pizza, but experimenting with grilling pizza it truly takes pizza to the next level.
