Sloppy Joes

Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground chicken or beef
  • 1/2 cup diced yellow onion
  • 8 ounces tomato sauce
  • 1/2 cup ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon dried mustard
  • 1/4 teaspoon celery seed
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 3/4 teaspoon kosher salt
  • Freshly ground black pepper
  • 4 buns

Instructions

  • In a small mixing bowl whisk together the tomato sauce ketchup, honey, apple cider vinegar, and Worcestershire sauce.
  • Add a little olive oil to a large skillet over medium-high heat. When hot, add in the ground chicken and diced onion. Crumble the chicken with a wooden spoon or spatula. When the meat is cooked through add in the chili powder, dry mustard, celery seed, garlic powder, salt and pepper and stir together.
  • Pour the sauce over the meat mixture and stir until it's coated in the sauce. Turn the heat down to low and simmer until the sauce thickens, about 10 minutes. Stir occasionally.
  • Serve on toasted buns as is or topped with pickles, cheese, onions, lettuce or other toppings of your choice.
