Good morning everyone! Today we are talking smoothies. Not just any smoothie, no no, today I made a delicious blackberry banana lime smoothie.
Sometimes I feel like blackberries are the forgotten berry. We all have tons of recipes using strawberries and blueberries, but how many recipes do you have that call for blackberries?
Finding good sweet blackberries seems to be a lot harder than finding strawberries and maybe that is the reason we don’t use them in recipes as often. Nothing is more mouth puckering than biting into a sour blackberry, you might as well eat a slice of lemon!
However, when you find a nice sweet juicy blackberry just try to stop after having just one! Some of the nutritional benefits of blackberries are they are loaded with vitamin C, they have only 62 calories per cup, their dark purple/blue color lets you know they are high in antioxidants, they are full of vitamin K which aids in muscle relaxation, and 30 percent of your daily fiber is found in just one cup of blackberries.
It isn’t quite berry season yet, and I’m skeptical about buying a box of fresh blackberries, but that didn’t stop me from buying a bag of frozen ones to use in my blackberry banana lime smoothie. To make this smoothie I of course used my star ingredient blackberries, but then also added in a banana and Greek yogurt to give the smoothie creaminess. To thin it out I used a little bit of skim milk and then sweetened it slightly with some honey. The final ingredient which I absolutely loved in this smoothie was the lime! The tangy citrus flavor was so refreshing and really brightened up the flavor of this smoothie. Sometimes I think smoothies can be rather one dimensional in flavor, all I can taste is a banana. This smoothie was full of exciting flavors for my tastebuds. First you get the sweet slightly tart flavor from the combination of the blackberries and banana, and then suddenly that fresh citrus flavor of the lime hits you, it’s a perfect combination! The next time you make a smoothie ditch the strawberries and go for the lesser used blackberry, you may be surprised to find how much you like it!
How much sugar is in this?
Can lemon be used instead? Or will change the flavor too much?
The flavor will definitely be different, but I think it would still taste great!
