Chocolate milk, raspberries and Greek yogurt make this protein filled Chocolate Raspberry Smoothie the perfect post- workout recovery drink or a dairy-filled breakfast for all the chocolate lovers out there!
Hellooo June! I can’t believe it’s finally here. Warm weather, green grass and trees full of leaves, it’s my favorite time of year here in Colorado. June also happens to be National Dairy Month and that is something to celebrate! America’s hard working dairy farmers provide us with so many healthy dairy foods. Did you know that one serving of milk, cheese or yogurt has 8 grams of high-quality protein and 9 essential nutrients?
I can’t imagine a world without dairy. No cheese, no ice cream, no yogurt, no milk…I would be one very sad girl. It’s true that I use non-dairy items in my recipes at times, but I never eliminate it, not when there are so many health benefits. Plus I’m sorry, but nothing can replace real cheese made with cow’s milk and ice cream made with milk and cream is really the only way to go.
To celebrate National Dairy Month I’ve teamed up with American Dairy Association Mideast to bring you this dairy-licious Chocolate Raspberry Smoothie! It’s the perfect post-workout way to refuel, plus you feel like you’re having a real treat because it’s chocolate.
Instead of using regular milk I did things a little different and used chocolate milk. Typically chocolate milk isn’t something I use a lot, but after a long and/or hard run it’s actually the perfect recovery drink.
Research has shown that the carb to protein ratio in chocolate milk is effective in promoting muscle recovery after an endurance workout. It’s actually been handed out at many of the races I’ve been in as an alternative to other recovery drinks. I’d take a bottle of chocolate milk over those fake fruity drinks any day!
The Chocolate Raspberry Smoothie is super easy to make and loaded with dairy. On top of the chocolate milk there is also some delicious Greek yogurt added in. I opted to use yogurt over a banana to make this smoothie thick, creamy, and full of protein.
There of course are plenty of raspberries, one cup to be exact, unsweetened cocoa powder for more chocolate flavor and a little honey to sweeten it up. It seriously tastes like you’re having dessert in this nutrient and protein packed smoothie!
Back to National Dairy Month. Early last fall I had the opportunity thanks to ADA Mideast, to visit several dairy farms in Ohio. In Ohio and West Virginia alone, dairy farm families raise more than 275,000 dairy cows on more than 2,700 dairy farms.
During an average year their cows produce approximately 645 million gallons, of milk…like whoa! That’s a lot of milk! Well done cows and farmers, well done. If you want to read a more detailed account of my trip including my first experience milking a cow at the Indoe’s family farm, check out my post for this Baked Denver Omelet.

Delicious! Perfect after our morning workout.
Needed a little more sweetness, but maybe because I didn’t have chocolate milk it tasted too tart from the yogurt. My toddlers are drinking it though!
Hi Amy,
The chocolate milk adds a fair amount of sweetness which is why you may have found it too tart in flavor if you used regular milk. Give it a try with the chocolate milk next time or add a little honey. I’m glad the toddlers are drinking it. :-)
This is delicious! I just made one and my kids gobbled it up. Thanks!
Kate

There is something so good about having a creamy thick smoothie after a run! Thanks Kristen and I hope your son likes it!
I love any excuse to eat more dairy! I wish I could start my day with this chocolate and raspberry smoothie. You can’t go wrong with that flavor combination. I will have to try this for breakfast or snack soon!
