Why you’ll love them
Chocolate and strawberries – A classic sweet combination! Most commonly paired together for Valentine’s Day, but delicious anytime strawberries are in season.
Healthy breakfast or snack – These overnight oats are packed with protein and fiber thanks to the Greek yogurt, chia seeds, oats, and strawberries.
One bowl – No need to dirty multiple bowls making these overnight oats, it all gets mixed together in one bowl. Cleanup couldn’t be easier!
Make ahead – Overnight oats are great if you’re looking for a make ahead breakfast or snack. They keep in the fridge for 4-5 days.
The ingredients
- Rolled oats – Also called old fashioned oats.
- Milk – Dairy or non-dairy milk may be used.
- Greek yogurt – Greek yogurt makes the overnight oats extra creamy and adds protein.
- Chia seeds – They are a good source of plant based protein and fiber.
- Maple syrup – A natural sweetener used to sweeten the oats.
- Vanilla extract – Enhances the sweetness and pairs beautifully with strawberries.
- Strawberries – Use the sweetest and freshest strawberries for the best flavor.
- Mini chocolate chips – I like to use dark chocolate, but semi-sweet or milk chocolate can also be used.
How to Make Overnight Oats
To make these strawberry chocolate chip overnight oats, start by whisking together the milk, Greek yogurt, maple syrup and vanilla in a bowl.
Once the wet ingredients are combined, stir in the oats, chia seeds, chocolate chips and strawberries.
At this point you can divide the oats into jars with lids or just cover the bowl with a lid or plastic wrap. Refrigerate for at least 3-4 hours, but overnight for the best results.
Tips for strawberry overnight oats
- If you want the strawberries to stay fresh and firm, wait to add them in just before eating the oats. I also found that freeze dried strawberries work well if fresh strawberries aren’t in season or the ones at the store aren’t looking so hot.
- Use low-fat or full fat Greek yogurt for the creamiest consistency and richer flavor. The added fat will also make them more satiating.
Variations and substitutions
- If strawberries aren’t available or don’t look good, use a different type of berry. Blueberries, raspberries, and blackberries all work well.
- Maple syrup can be substituted with an equal amount of honey.
- Boost the protein and add a scoop of vanilla protein powder. If using sweetened protein powder, omit the maple syrup.
- Add a couple tablespoons of nut butter for healthy fats and protein.
- Swirl in Nutella for an extra chocolatey element.
Do overnight oats have to be eaten cold?
No. You can reheat them in the microwave until they’re warm. You may need to add an extra splash of milk unless you like them super thick and the consistency of pudding like I do.
A bonus with this strawberry chocolate chip flavor, is that the chocolate chips melt when you reheat the oats and you’re left with chocolate oatmeal!
Can quick oats be used to make overnight oats?
Yes, however the consistency will be more mushy, similar to that of porridge.
Can I make the overnight oats without chia seeds?
Yes. Replace the chia seeds with an equal amount of oats so that the consistency stays the same.
Storage
Overnight oats will keep for up to 5 days in an airtight container in the refrigerator. If you mix the strawberries or any fruit into them, I don’t recommend keeping them for more than 4 days.
My personal preference is to mix the strawberries in right before eating them so they don’t get mushy and discolor the oats.

Yes, any type of milk can be used. If you omit the chia seeds I advise adding an additional tablespoon of oats to achieve the same thickness and consistency.
