Why you’ll love it

Minimal ingredients – Not including the garnishes, this sweet and spicy chicken only uses 7 ingredients. Many of the ingredients you probably already have on hand.

Quick and easy – Honey garlic chicken is a breeze to make! Prepping is minimal and in the time that it takes to cook the rice, the chicken will be cooked and ready to eat.

Family-friendly – Both kids and adults will love the sweet and sticky sauce that coats each bite of chicken. Add in broccoli or sugar snap peas for a serving of veggies or make this Asian edamame salad to serve on the side.

Ingredients used to make honey garlic chicken.

The ingredients

  • Chicken breasts – Cut the chicken into similar sized chunks so that they cook evenly.
  • Cornstarch – Used to thicken the honey garlic sauce and to coat the chicken so that it gets crispy.
  • Garlic – The recipe calls for 3 cloves or about 1 teaspoon grated or minced. If that seems like a lot to you, cut back to 2 cloves.
  • Chicken broth – Use low sodium to keep the sauce from being too salty.
  • Soy sauce – Low sodium should be used. Tamari is the gluten-free substitute.
  • Honey – Gives the sauce that sweet flavor and sticky texture. If you want it sweeter feel free to add another tablespoon.
  • Chili paste – Sambal Oelek or chili garlic sauce are other common names. You’ll find it in the Asian foods section of the grocery store.
  • Green onions and sesame seeds – I highly recommend adding the garnishes for extra flavor and texture.

How to make honey garlic chicken

This is an overview of the recipe with step-by-step photos. Full ingredients & instructions can be found in the recipe card below.

Add all of the ingredients for the honey garlic sauce to a measuring glass or bowl and whisk them together.

Season the chunks of chicken with salt and pepper and toss them in cornstarch until they’re coated.

Add the chicken to a large skillet that’s been heated with enough oil to coat the bottom. Spread the chicken into a single layer and let it cook untouched for 3-4 minutes.

Flip the chicken and continue to cook it until it’s golden brown and cooked through. During the last minute of cooking, add in the garlic and incorporate it in with the chicken.

Pour in the honey garlic sauce and continuously stir until the sauce thickens and coats all of the pieces of chicken, about 2-3 minutes. Garnish with sliced scallions and sesame seeds.

Ways to serve honey garlic chicken

  • I like to serve it on top of either Jasmine or basmati rice.
  • For a low carb options, try serving it on top of cauliflower rice or use it as a filling for lettuce wraps.
  • If you’re a noodle lover, serve on top of rice noodles.

Is honey garlic chicken gluten-free?

If you swap soy sauce with the gluten-free alternative, tamari, the recipe will be gluten-free.

Storage

Storage – The chicken will keep in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.

Reheating – To reheat the chicken either microwave it until warmed through or heat it in a skillet over medium-low heat. Be careful not to heat too long as the sauce will continue to thicken.

Freezing – The leftovers can be frozen, but be aware that the texture and consistency of the sauce will likely change.
