Why You’ll Love Ground Beef and Brussels Sprouts Skillet
Easy Skillet Recipe – I love a simple one pan dinner and this beef and brussels sprouts fits the bill! Minimal ingredients and 30 minutes and you’ll be enjoying this delicious dinner.
Sweet Chili Sauce – Sweet chili sauce is a great way to add a ton of sweet and spicy flavor to a meal. I used it in these sweet chili salmon bowls and was obsessed!
Meal prep – If you’re someone who likes to meal prep lunches or dinners for the week, this is a great option. There’s basically no prepping if you buy a bag of pre-shredded brussels sprouts and this recipe makes enough for 4 servings.
Ingredient Notes
Ground beef – Use lean ground beef so that the dish doesn’t get too greasy.
Brussels sprouts – Buy a bag of pre-shredded brussels sprouts to save time.
Soy sauce – Always use low sodium soy sauce. If you need this recipe to be gluten-free use low sodium tamari.
Sriracha – This is an optional ingredient, but if you want an extra spicy kick, add it in.
Garlic powder – You can also use a clove of fresh minced or grate garlic if you prefer.
Green onions – I use green onions for their mild onion flavor and because they soften quickly.
Sweet chili sauce – Use your favorite brand. I’ve been using Sky Valley sweet chili sauce lately and like it.
Lime – Fresh lime juice squeezed in at the very end is a great way to brighten up the flavors and add a little zesty kick!
How to Make Ground Beef and Brussels Sprouts
Add the ground beef to a skillet and crumble it. Add in the green onions. Season with a little salt and pepper, garlic powder, sriracha, and soy sauce. Once cooked through remove it from the skillet onto a plate.
Add a tablespoon of oil to the skillet and toss in the brussels sprouts. Season with a little salt and pepper and saute them until they’re soft and caramelized.
Add the ground beef back into the skillet along with the sweet chili sauce. Squeeze in the lime juice and stir everything together until it’s coated in the sauce and heated through. Serve topped with sesame seeds if desired.
Substitutions and Variations
- If you don’t like sweet chili sauce, teriyaki sauce is another good option.
- Swap ground beef with and type of ground meat. I’ve made it with ground bison and ground venison and both were great.
- Use different veggies. Shredded cabbage, broccoli, carrots, and red bell peppers would all work well. A bag of broccoli slaw or cabbage coleslaw mix are also great time savers.
Ways to Serve Beef and Brussels Sprouts
- Add it on top of white or brown rice. Quinoa is also a great option if you’re looking for something higher protein.
- Wanting a lower carb meal? Add it on top of cauliflower rice.
- It’s delicious tossed together with rice noodles or ramen noodles.
- You can also serve it right out of the skillet and make this cucumber avocado salad to serve with it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use ground turkey?
Yes! Ground turkey or ground chicken both work well as a substitution for ground beef. Ground bison or ground venison are good if you’re looking for other types of red meat to use.
Do I have to use shredded brussels sprouts?
No. Instead of shredded brussels sprouts you can simply halve them. They will take longer to cook if you choose to do it that way.
Can ground beef and brussels sprouts be frozen?
Personally, I don’t like the texture of brussels sprouts after they’ve been frozen. They get mushy. If that doesn’t bother you, then yes you can freeze it, otherwise, skip it.
Storage and Reheating
Storage – This ground beef skillet keeps for up to 4 days in an airtight container in the refrigerator.
Reheating – Reheat the leftovers in the microwave for 30-60 seconds or until hot. You can also reheat it in a skillet on the stove until heated through.
